What is firmographic data?

Updated August 2026  //  by Mark Glazer  //  the company-level attributes behind every list

Firmographic data is the set of attributes that describe a company the way demographics describe a person: industry, headcount, revenue, location, ownership structure, age. It is the data layer B2B targeting is built on - before anyone writes a subject line, firmographics decide which companies belong on the list at all.

Get the firmographic filter wrong and everything downstream is wasted effort: the 402,477-email campaign book behind our published benchmarks starts, on every campaign, with a firmographic definition of who should be contacted - and who should not.

The standard firmographic fields

Different vendors slice the taxonomy differently, but B2B targeting runs on a short, stable list of company attributes:

Field What it captures What it decides
IndustryWhat the company does, usually as a code (NAICS, SIC) or a vendor categoryWhether your problem exists there at all
Company sizeHeadcount, usually bandedBudget, buying process, who owns the decision
RevenueAnnual revenue, banded; estimated for private companiesWhether the deal size you need is plausible
LocationHQ and operating geographyLegal regime, time zones, service coverage
Structure and ownershipIndependent, subsidiary, franchise, PE-backed, publicWhere decisions are actually made
Company age and trajectoryFounding year, growth signals, funding eventsUrgency and appetite for change

Two related layers sit next to these: technographic data (what tools the company runs) and contact-level data (the person, their role, their address). A usable B2B record needs all three, which is why enrichment exists as its own discipline.

Firmographic vs demographic vs technographic

The three data layers

Demographics

Describe a person: role, seniority, location.

Answers: who owns the problem?

Firmographics

Describe the organization: industry, size, revenue, location, structure.

Answers: can this company buy?

Technographics

Describe what it runs: CRM, mail provider, tooling.

Answers: are we relevant to it?

The three terms get used interchangeably, and they should not be. Demographics describe people: age, role, seniority, location. Firmographics describe organizations: the fields in the table above. Technographics describe the tools an organization runs: its CRM, its mail provider, its analytics stack. A cold email campaign filters on firmographics first, then targets a person the demographics say owns the problem, then personalizes and routes using technographics where they matter.

Where firmographic data comes from

Every commercial database assembles roughly the same sources: company registries and filings, websites and careers pages, directories and review platforms, news and funding announcements, and statistical inference to fill the gaps. That last part matters more than vendors advertise - revenue for private companies is usually an estimate, size bands drift as companies hire and cut, and industry codes flatten businesses that straddle categories. Treat every purchased firmographic field as a claim to verify, not a fact - the same discipline we apply to email addresses that arrive marked verified.

How a cold email programme actually uses firmographics

  • List definition. The ideal customer profile is written as explicit firmographic bounds - industries in, industries out, size floor and ceiling, geography - before list building starts. If it is not written down, it cannot be audited when results disagree with expectations.
  • Segmentation. Campaigns are split along firmographic lines so that copy can name the segment's actual situation. A 40-person agency and a 4,000-person enterprise do not share pains, and copy that tries to address both reaches neither.
  • Exclusion. Competitors, existing clients, companies too small to buy, geographies you cannot serve. Exclusion lists are firmographic filters run in reverse, and they do as much for reply quality as any subject line.
  • Reading results. When one sequence earns replies and another does not, the first split worth checking is firmographic: which industries and size bands answered. Across the 89 campaigns in our 2026 book, campaign-to-campaign spread (quartiles at 1.26% and 2.96% of contacted leads) is driven far more by who was contacted than by which template was used.

Set any filter above: every excluded card names the bound that removed it - that audit trail is what a written ICP gives you.

Firmographic data decays

Companies move, merge, rebrand, hire past their size band and shut down - so a firmographic record is a snapshot, not a property. This is the same mechanism that makes purchased email lists bounce months after they were verified, applied to company fields instead of mailboxes. The practical rule: filter on fresh data, re-check the fields your targeting depends on at send time where you can, and distrust any pitch built on "records" without a date attached. Our own working answer is to verify at the moment of use - lists are built and verified live for each campaign rather than drawn from a warehouse and trusted.

Written firmographic bounds, then a list built and verified against them for each campaign - before any copy exists.

Common questions

What is firmographic data in simple terms?

It is the company version of demographics: industry, headcount, revenue, location and structure. Demographics describe a person; firmographics describe the organization that person works for. B2B targeting filters on firmographics first because they decide whether a company can buy at all.

What are examples of firmographic data?

A record might read: software company, 120 employees, estimated $18M revenue, headquartered in Toronto, independent, founded 2016. Each field narrows who belongs on a target list, and each can be wrong in its own way - which is why verification at time of use matters.

Is firmographic data the same as technographic data?

No. Firmographics describe what a company is; technographics describe what it runs - its CRM, mail provider and tooling. They answer different targeting questions and come from different sources. The full comparison is on technographic data.

Why does firmographic data matter for cold email?

Because the list outweighs the copy. Firmographic filters decide who gets contacted, and in our measured campaign book who-was-contacted explains far more of the reply-rate spread than message wording does. A precise firmographic definition is the cheapest performance lever in the channel.
